    Climate Champion

    Outings Leader

    Grassroots Activist

  • Why I Am Running

The next four years will be challenging for anyone who considers themself an environmentalist, climate change activist, and/or outdoor enthusiasist. For over a hundred years, Sierra Club has been the gathering place for people like us. Since I joined in 2015, Sierra Club leaders have been some of my most gracious mentors and sources of inspiration. I want to ensure Sierra Club achieves its 2030 organizational goal of becoming “an interdependent organization where staff and volunteers are supported to take risks, learn, and live our values in service of our shared mission and vision.” We need to rediscover our source of power and be the leaders for the environmental movement that we have always been. My priorities are climate action, organizational renewal, and revitalizing outings.

    About

I was born in Vancouver, Canada the same year James Hansen testified before Congress that the greenhouse effect was unmistakeable. I joined my first climate march in 2015 and my first Sierra Club snowcamping outing in 2016. Since then, I have volunteered for Sierra Club as an Outings Leader, Conservation activist, and Chapter representative. I have been fortunate to work professionally for almost nine years in cleantech as a data scientist. My wife, Jessica, and I live in Millbrae, just south of San Francisco.

  • My Top Priorities

Rise to the climate challenge and mobilize for faster action

Opposition to climate change does not come just from the fossil fuel industry. Bike lanes, transit stops, affordable housing, and clean energy all face local opposition, so we need to mobilize local support for the change we want to see. In 2023, Bill McKibben wrote that environmentalists need to get comfortable saying “yes in our backyards”. Sierra Club has made policy shifts in this direction, most recently with our Renewable Energy Siting Policy. Now we need to follow that up with organizing, so that our activists know where to show up to support the building we need.

Focus on our people and rebuilding our organization

Our most important challenge and opportunity is our people. Sierra Club is powerful because of our members, our volunteers and our staff. However, membership is not really growing, many Chapters are struggling to build a leadership pipeline, and our staff are worn out. In my experience, grassroots activism has to be fun and invigorating to keep people engaged. Our volunteers should find joy in coming together, our staff should feel they can build a many-year career with us, and our members should be proud to say so.

    Reinvigorate local outings

So many of Sierra Club's current leaders, including me, first came into Sierra Club via locally-organized outings. Yet the Local Outings perspective feels less well-represented at the highest levels of Sierra Club than the Political or Conservation activism. I will bring the local outings perspective directly to the Board and ensure that our financial and risk management policies work for the needs of volunteer outings leaders.

I have worked with Nathan since 2018, first as an outings leader, of the Loma Prieta Chapter 20s&30s Activity section, and later on, as a colleague of his on the Chapter ExCom; he also represented our chapter as Council of Club Leaders representative.

Here is what I know about Nathan:

He is a dedicated environmentalist, understands the issues facing our planet and acts positively with others to take action. His opinions are well researched and taken with full knowledge and balance. His personal integrity is very high, as is his emotional intelligence.

As a chair emeritus of the Tennessee Chapter-Sierra Club, I whole heartedly endorse Nathan Chan as a candidate for the National Board of Directors. While serving several years as a colleague with Nathan on the Council of Club Leaders, I always enjoyed his keen insights and perspective. On multiple occasions during CCL resolution debate, I trusted Nathan’s common sense approach in resolving complex issues. He will be a refreshing voice within our ever changing organization.
